Franchising is a methodology which allows an owner (franchiser) to grant to an independent operator (franchisee) the opportunity to market, sell and distribute products or services owned by the franchiser. Included within this framework, the franchisee generally has access to trademarks, advertising, training, techniques and other inside information proprietary to the franchiser. Licensing, on the other hand, is a technique that authorizes a licensee to use property owned by a licensor for a specified term or in a particular territory. Licensing is frequently seen in the software industry as well as intellectual property.
